Ces courts extraits illustrent les trois phases d&#8217;\u00e9laboration qui ont pr\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9 le texte tel que nous le connaissons aujourd&#8217;hui, c&#8217;est-\u00e0-dire le premier manuscrit, le manuscrit original du livre et la version publi\u00e9e sous forme de livre.<\/p>\n<p>Les ratures port\u00e9es de fa\u00e7on syst\u00e9matique sur le premier manuscrit t\u00e9moignent de la volont\u00e9 d\u00e9lib\u00e9r\u00e9e de l\u2019auteur d&#8217;utiliser tous les passages dans la version d\u00e9finitive, et les dates dans la marge du haut montrent comment Josep Pla transforme son journal en fiction, en suivant toujours de tr\u00e8s pr\u00e8s le calendrier des ann\u00e9es 1918 et 1919 afin de pouvoir r\u00e9diger son livre.<\/p>\n<p>En comparant les textes, on peut voir qu\u2019il y a une v\u00e9ritable \u00e9volution du style qui consiste, notamment, \u00e0 supprimer certaines r\u00e9f\u00e9rences \u00e0 sa vie intime, \u00e0 d\u00e9velopper les descriptions et surtout, \u00e0 donner une port\u00e9e litt\u00e9raire \u00e0 des id\u00e9es qui, dans le premier manuscrit, ne sont que de simples sch\u00e9mas. L\u2019\u00e9crivain a toujours pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 cette \u0153uvre comme s&#8217;il s&#8217;agissait v\u00e9ritablement de son journal de jeunesse, comme s&#8217;il l&#8217;avait r\u00e9ellement enti\u00e8rement \u00e9crit pendant les ann\u00e9es 1918-1919 et comme s&#8217;il l&#8217;avait publi\u00e9 pour la premi\u00e8re fois en 1966. Le th\u00e8me central est l\u2019arriv\u00e9e angoissante d\u2019un jeune \u00e9crivain dans le monde des adultes et sa lente prise de conscience du m\u00e9tier d\u2019\u00e9crivain.<\/p>\n<p><em>El quadern gris<\/em> commence par la pr\u00e9sentation de la situation dans laquelle se trouve le protagoniste : le 8 mars 1918, jour de son vingt et uni\u00e8me anniversaire, il est \u00e0 Palafrugell et vient de quitter Barcelone \u00e0 cause de l\u2019\u00e9pid\u00e9mie de grippe. Cette fa\u00e7on de commencer le livre lui permet de faire aussit\u00f4t le bilan de sa vie et de se mettre \u00e0 \u00e9crire en d\u00e9veloppant une v\u00e9ritable obsession : le paysage de l&#8217;Ampourdan qui devient le v\u00e9ritable d\u00e9fi narratif, descriptif et stylistique du tout jeune \u00e9crivain.<\/p>\n<p>Constamment angoiss\u00e9, tourment\u00e9 par l&#8217;obsession de l\u2019\u00e9criture, il lui faut terminer ses \u00e9tudes afin d\u2019acc\u00e9der \u00e0 un minimum de stabilit\u00e9 financi\u00e8re et affronter la r\u00e9alit\u00e9 et la vie dans toute sa v\u00e9rit\u00e9. Dans les ann\u00e9es vingt, il a refait quelques paragraphes, a ajout\u00e9 et supprim\u00e9 des passages, a incorpor\u00e9 (en les coupant et en les collant) des articles qu\u2019il publiait dans la presse. \u00c0 partir des ann\u00e9es quarante, lorsqu&#8217;il s&#8217;est r\u00e9install\u00e9 en Ampourdan, Pla a tr\u00e8s probablement commenc\u00e9 une r\u00e9daction compl\u00e8te de son livre qui s&#8217;est alors consid\u00e9rablement \u00e9toff\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Dans les ann\u00e9es cinquante et soixante, Pla devait d\u00e9j\u00e0 penser le publier, et il a donc commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 le structurer en un livre de deux volumes (le premier pour l&#8217;ann\u00e9e 1918, le second pour 1919), en travaillant avec le premier cahier devant lui, prenant soin d&#8217;\u00e9liminer certaines r\u00e9f\u00e9rences \u00e0 sa vie intime ou d\u2019autres aspects de la vie quotidienne qui cassaient l\u2019image g\u00e9n\u00e9rale que le protagoniste du livre voulait donner de lui-m\u00eame.<\/p>\n<p>Dans la phase finale de la r\u00e9daction, au d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es soixante, Pla devait continuer \u00e0 r\u00e9\u00e9laborer son manuscrit et \u00e0 lui donner une port\u00e9e litt\u00e9raire, barrant avec obsession les passages qu&#8217;il r\u00e9utilisait pour la version d\u00e9finitive. Ce manuscrit est une pi\u00e8ce unique de la bibliographie catalane contemporaine, et son \u00e9tude comparative avec la version publi\u00e9e sous forme de livre en 1966 donne de nouvelles cl\u00e9s permettant de mieux comprendre comment Pla travaillait ses manuscrits.<\/p>\n<p>Le manuscrit original de <em>El quadern gris <\/em>est effectivement un journal, sans titre, qui occupe un cahier de cent pages et dont la couverture est grise. Une courte suite est \u00e9crite dans un cahier identique mais dont la couverture est rouge. Le journal est \u00e9crit tant\u00f4t au crayon tant\u00f4t \u00e0 la plume.
